Freak Palace is a fashion newsletter that’s not concerned with what’s happening on the runways. It’s about what people are actually wearing, individual taste and figuring out how to consume in an honest way that’s somewhere in between materialistic and monastic.
I write for people who are critical of the fashion establishment industrial complex yet love act of getting dressed with a passion that borders on unhinged. I publish a mix of old school fashion criticism, off-the-cuff opinion pieces, reported essays about the state of the industry, product recommendations, and plenty of personal style inspiration.
What’s a Freak Palace?
A Freak Palace is an outer manifestation of an inner world. It’s also the name of my wifi network and the nickname I gave my apartment, which is filled with all manner of tchotchkes and decor that define my interests and speaks to the type of person I’d like to be perceived as. the type of person I am (lettuceware, Jasperware, and all manner of thrifted treasures). Anywhere can be a Freak Palace, really, whether it’s a museum dedicated to troll dolls, or a cottage decorated with salvaged sea shells. Maybe the real Freak Palace is just your mind.
Who am I?
Isabel Slone, or Isabel B. Slone, depending on which publication you’re reading, is an esteemed fashion journalist based in Toronto, ON with a penchant for the unique and surprising. She has written about cottagecore for the New York Times, a paean to orthopedic shoes for New York Magazine and the counterintuitive appeal of Hooters for Playboy. She has been writing about fashion since 2012, or 2006 if you count the fashion blog she started writing in high school. She has a Master’s Degree in Journalism from Columbia University.
She was put on earth to do two things: ask questions and witness all the beauty this world has to offer. Broadly, this newsletter combines both.
