We all know that fashion influencers have amazing style — it’s literally their job — but do you ever see a mysterious person in a coffee shop, or on the street and think ‘damn, they really know how to dress’? What about the regular joes with cracking style who pour heaps of attention into their self-presentation everyday, yet are too lazy to document it every day or have simply decided on a different career path?
I’d like to take the time to celebrate several ‘normal’ folks, some I know in real life, some over social media, who I think deserve a way bigger following for the way they dress, and whom I find endlessly inspiring every day.
Liz Guber
My friend Liz is one of the best-dressed people I have ever met. (She’s also my twin in many ways, we’re both fashion journalists who are obsessed with vintage and live in the sae neighbourhood.) Every time I see her, she’s wearing something that’s both chic and unexpected, pairing menswear and tailored items together in a way that’s surprisingly relaxed. She’s also one of those deeply cool people who never bothered to get social media — chic!—so her outfits are what I call “subscribers-only” aka you have to know her in real life to enjoy them. Sometimes she sends me mirror selfies when she’s trying to pick out an outfit and I’m always delighted by whatever combination she’s picked out.
Chrissy Rhee
Chrissy (@monobrow_nyc) is a New York City-based designer who I’ve orbited since the early days of fashion blogging 1.0. While she doesn’t post outfits super often, I am consistently blown away by thoughtfulness and consistency of her wardrobe whenever she does. I’m incredibly inspired by her elegant yet laid-back style and the bite-sized origin stories she shares about how she acquired her clothes. Many times, she’ll post something and I’ll immediately go try to recreate a similar outfit out of things I already own. Here’s to wearing more worn-in jeans with flouncy clown tops.
Adrien Reynolds
Adrien (@alienreynolds), who I know through her job in fashion PR, is kind of the ultimate cool girl. I’m a huge fan of her severe Vidal Sasson-style haircut and flair for dramatic dressing—I’ve never seen her meet an animal print she didn’t like—plus she clocks even more cool points for being engaged to the co-founder of hipster sandwich emporium Lambo’s Deli. (She’s a sandwich heiress!) Her style is both kooky and elegant, an incredibly hard thing to pull off, but somehow she manages it with amplomb. Adrien is basically my style North Star.
